Tree Surgery

Tree surgery is a term used to describe the process of providing supplemental support systems for trees. You might be wondering why arborists would recommend such a treatment…? The short answer is that additional support for trees is often required to keep a tree in the landscape, as structural defects which are present may cause the tree to fail. The reasons why these structural defects exist are numerous but are often related to the following:

  • The absence of formative structural pruning, which allows a tree to grow multiple codominant stems that may be weakly attached and prone to failure
  • Injuries such as frost cracks predispose tree stems to failure, especially if they are near major branch unions.
  • Over-extended branches can grow very long and large in diameter. These branches can fail catastrophically, destroying a tree and causing significant property damage.
